Organization: Blithewold Mansion, Garden and Arboretum

Positions Available:  1-2 students   approx 16-30 hours 

Schedule:  Flexible schedule to accommodate student – any hours M-F 7:30-4pm is available

Position Summary:

Blithewold Arboretum is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Roger Williams University student to join our team as a Curatorial Assistant. This work study position offers an opportunity for students interested in horticulture, botany, and museum studies to gain hands-on experience in curatorial practices within a historic arboretum setting. The Curatorial Assistant will support the arboretum's mission by conducting research in the archives, assessing the tree collection, identifying significant parts of the collections, updating and curating the database, etc. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collection Management: Assist with the cataloging, labeling, and documentation of plant specimens and artifacts in the arboretum’s collection. Ensure accurate records are maintained and updated regularly.
  • Research and Documentation: Conduct research on plant species, historical records, and curatorial practices. Assist in compiling and organizing research findings for internal use and public dissemination.
  • Administrative Support: Perform administrative tasks such as filing, data entry, and correspondence. Assist in organizing and maintaining curatorial archives and resources.

Qualifications:

  • Interest and Knowledge: A strong interest in botany, horticulture, museum studies, or a related field. Basic knowledge of plant care and curatorial practices is a plus.
  • Skills: Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple tasks. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work outdoors and perform tasks requiring physical effort, such as lifting and carrying materials.
  • Attitude: Enthusiastic, proactive, and willing to learn. Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team.

Transportation: Blithewold is located within walking distance (.5 miles from campus on Rt. 114/101 Ferry Road).
