Tschirch introduces Iconic Trees of Newport at Rosecliff
Adjunct Professor John Tschirch provided the introductory remarks on “The Iconic Trees of Newport: Past, Present and Future” at the ’s event on June 27, 2024, exploring the city’s landscape history, the cause and treatment of beech leaf disease, and strategies for planting to preserve the citywide treescape. Tschirch is the author of America’s Eden: Newport Landscapes Through the Ages (London: Giles, 2022) sponsored by the , and has lectured extensively on the subject across the US, UK and in Italy. Other speakers included Joe Verstandig, Living Collections Manager for the Newport Tree Conservancy, Jeff Curtis, Director of Gardens and Landscapes, Jim Donahue, Curator of Historic Landscapes and Horticulture; and scientists from who announced their recent breakthroughs in treating beech leaf disease.
